Year 3

11+ Preparation in Year 3

Year 3 is far too early to "do 11+ papers", but it is the perfect time to build the foundations that make later preparation easy: a love of reading, strong number sense and curiosity. The goal is habits, not cramming.

What to focus on

  • Reading widely and daily — fiction and non-fiction — for vocabulary and stamina.
  • Times tables and number bonds becoming automatic.
  • Talking about words, ideas and "why" questions to grow reasoning.

Key milestones

Reading habit

Establish 15–20 minutes of independent reading most days.

Number fluency

Begin securing times tables up to 12 through short, regular practice.

Curiosity

Encourage puzzles, board games and "how does that work?" conversations.

End-of-year checklist

  • A daily reading routine is in place.
  • Times tables practice happens little and often.
  • No formal 11+ papers yet — keep it playful.

FAQs

Is Year 3 too early to start the 11+?+

Too early for exam papers, yes — but ideal for foundations. Reading, vocabulary and number fluency built now pay off enormously later.
