11+ Synonyms

Synonym questions reward a broad vocabulary. The technique is to test meaning in a sentence and eliminate near-misses.

A synonym is a word with the same or very similar meaning, such as "happy" and "joyful". 11+ questions ask you to pick the closest match from several options.

The reliable method is substitution: try each option in a simple sentence in place of the target word and keep the one that changes the meaning least. Eliminate words that are merely related but not equivalent.

Long-term, the single biggest lever is vocabulary. Wide reading and a steady habit of looking up unfamiliar words builds the word bank these questions depend on.

Worked examples

Q. Choose the synonym of ABUNDANT: scarce, plentiful, empty, narrow.

"Abundant" means existing in large quantity, so the closest match is "plentiful".

Q. Choose the synonym of RAPID: slow, gentle, swift, late.

"Rapid" means fast, so the synonym is "swift".

Common mistakes

  • Choosing an antonym (opposite) by reading too quickly.
  • Picking a word that is related to the topic but not the same in meaning.
  • Not testing each option in a sentence.
